01 - Background

Sphero partnered with Star Wars and Disney to create a robotic toy version of the BB-8 droid, the cute roly-poly robot introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

For the launch and beyond, I was tasked with coming up with content that could be used across the company's many needs (online marketing, social channels, trade show booths, and sales meetings).

My answer was 30+ mini adventures that I wrote, filmed, and edited. Each adventure was focused on showcasing the playful and curious nature of BB-8, told through a variety of interesting encounters, humorous situations, and mischievous scenarios.

Here are a few of my storyboards I pitched to the Star Wars licensing team. I’d usually build a deck of 3-5 concepts and send them to the Star Wars team for approvals. While those were pending and in review, I’d shoot my previously approved concepts.

18+ Million Impresions

The Curious Adventures of BB-8 were an enormous hit for Sphero, bringing in 18+ million impressions across social media and were covered by some of the internet’s biggest tech news sites.

The videos also became a major tool for the sales team and in 2015, Sphero’s BB-8 app-enabled droid was the year’s top selling Star Wars toy.
